Junior Volunteer Firefighters

The Junior Firefighter (JFF) program is provided for qualified persons between the ages of 16 years and 18 years. After you have completed your training, you may participate in the duties of a Junior Firefighter or a Junior Educator.

Duties

Junior firefighters do the same work that everyone else does, with the exception that they can’t enter a burning building or IDLH environment (Immediate Danger to Life and Health.) They train the same, attend drills, respond to emergencies and perform jobs that need to be done outside a burning structure like water supply, equipment retrieval, changing air packs, manning exterior hose lines, and overhaul.

How to Qualify:

  • Be 16 years old upon completion of the “Basic Recruit Academy”
  • Possess a valid Oregon Driver’s License with a good driving record
  • Pass a background check
  • Attend a Recruit Academy to become trained in fire and EMS operations
  • Provide the Training Officer documentation from the school attended that the applicant has had a minimum of a 2.5 GPA for the last 12 months.
  • Provide at least one (1) written recommendation from an adult employee of the school attended.
  • Provide parent/guardian written authorization to participate in program.

Other Restrictions:

  • Additionally the department will not pay for outside schools unless the training officer recommends a specific school that will definitely benefit Junior Firefighters. This recommendation must be approved by the Chief Officers.
  • No Junior Fire fighters will at any time drive any department vehicles or operate power tools.
  • Junior firefighters shall not be issued badges.
